The Total Show – Su Hui-Yu

The Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá (MAMBO) presents the first solo exhibition in the Americas by Taiwanese artist Su Hui-Yu (Taipei, 1976), whose multidisciplinary practice spans video installation, time-based art, and performance. With a career spanning more than two decades, Su Hui-Yu has developed a critical approach to narratives of popular culture, political history, and social conflict, exploring the tensions between memory, identity, and technology.
Su Hui-Yu’s work is characterized by a revision and resignification of mass media content, cult cinema, and historical archives from Taiwan. His series of projects under the concept of “re-shooting” uses contemporary technologies such as deepfake and digital tools to reconstruct and reinterpret images, scenes, and characters from the past. This exercise not only revisits censored or forgotten moments in history, but also opens up new narrative possibilities that challenge social constructs and gender stereotypes.
The centerpiece of this exhibition is The Trio Hall (2022), an immersive installation that turns the museum into a television and film set, using real-time performance and occurrences as its raw material. After its successful presentation at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei, Taiwan, the project is recontextualized for the Colombian setting and imaginary.
The exhibition at MAMBO presents a selection of works that explore the intersection between technology and the body, questioning patriarchal and colonial structures through a queer lens. Su Hui-Yu uses the language of cinema and science fiction to create speculative universes where temporalities dissolve and new configurations of power, desire, and resistance emerge. From revisiting Taiwanese films of the 1980s to futuristic narratives that dismantle the logic of capitalism and linear time, the artist offers a sharp critique of social control and the mediatization of the body.
This exhibition celebrates Su Hui-Yu’s ability to combine social critique with a deeply evocative aesthetic, turning art into a means to reimagine narratives and challenge dominant structures. With this show, MAMBO reaffirms its commitment to presenting innovative proposals that expand the horizons of global contemporary art.
